What happens when you run out of Zapier tasks?
With pay-per-task on, your Zaps keep running past your plan’s limit and you’re billed for the extra tasks. They pause at 3× your plan’s task limit. Zapier doesn’t publish the exact overage rate, so the cost below is an estimate.

What Zapier confirms
- Zaps pause at 3× your plan’s task limit (Zapier help, read 2026-10-16).
- The pay-per-task rate “depends on your plan and billing cycle type.” Zapier doesn’t publish the rate for each billing cycle.
- A task is a successful action step. Filter, Formatter and Paths steps don’t count as tasks.
- The Free plan allows one trigger plus one action (Zapier help, read 2026-10-16).
Estimated overage (annual plan)
An older Zapier product update mentions 1.25× the plan’s per-task rate (source, read 2026-10-16). We use that figure as an estimate only.
Example: Professional plan, 2,000 tasks, annual billing, using 2,500 tasks a month. Prices from zapier.com/pricing, read 2026-10-16. There’s no tier between 2K and 5K.
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Plan price (2,000 tasks) | $49/mo |
| Base rate ($49 ÷ 2,000) | $0.0245 per task |
| Estimated overage rate (×1.25) | ≈ $0.0306 per task |
| 500 extra tasks | ≈ $15.31 |
| Estimated total | ≈ $64.31 |
| Next tier (5,000 tasks) | $89/mo |
| Zaps pause at | 6,000 tasks (3×) |
For monthly billing, Zapier doesn’t publish a multiplier, so we don’t estimate one.
How to keep the bill down
- Use Filters, Formatters and Paths for logic, since they don’t count as tasks.
- If you go over every month, compare the next tier with Make and n8n. See Zapier vs Make and Zapier vs n8n.
