A Zap costs one task per successful billable action: 12,000 runs a month of a 5-action Zap is 60,000 tasks, which prices at $489.00/mo (Professional 100,000 tasks) on annual billing.

Tasks: what Zapier charges for
Each successful billable action step. Triggers and built-ins (Filter, Formatter, Paths, Delay, Looping) = 0 tasks; they still make a Zap multi-step, which rules out Free.
So the formula is tasks = runs × billable actions. Filter, Formatter and Path steps are free, but any one of them makes a Zap multi-step.

Pay-per-task: Zaps stop at 3x your plan, and the rate is not published
On by default for accounts created after January 2024; older accounts may need to opt in. With pay-per-task on, Zaps keep running past your plan's limit and stop at 3x the plan's tasks (plan + pay-per-task). That cap is verified. The rate is not published: overage tasks are charged at a higher per-task rate than plan tasks, and Zapier gives no figure.
So the calculator shows no overage price and never ranks a plan on it. The ranked price is always the overage-free option: the plan that covers your volume.
Example: 3,000 tasks on annual billing. Verified price without overage: next tier that covers the volume ($89.00/mo (Professional 5,000 tasks)). With pay-per-task: overage rate not published (staying on the 2,000-task plan means paying for 1,000 extra tasks, cap 6,000 tasks), so no total is shown. On monthly billing the same volume is $133.50/mo (Professional 5,000 tasks).
If your volume is above 3x the lower plan, that path is closed: the cap is exceeded and an upgrade is required.
How many tasks an action uses
Standard actions use 1 task. AI model tier, code runtime and connector type affect how many tasks an action uses. One MCP tool call uses two tasks. Extended Code runtime (off by default, not on Free) beyond the included runtime uses 1 task per 30-second block. AI steps are not priced here: an AI step uses 1, 3 or 5 tasks by model tier (Standard, Advanced, Premium), and the calculator doesn't ask for the tier yet (zapier.com/pricing/rates, read 2026-10-17).
The Free plan rule
Free is 100 tasks a month for two-step Zaps only (a trigger plus 1 action). Two-step Zaps only (trigger + 1 action). Any extra step, including a Filter/Formatter/Path, needs Professional. Webhooks are not available on Free.
